Instagram’s Kevin Systrom finally has an explanation as to why the app censors female nipples, including those of Chelsea Handler and Naomi Campbell , and he’s pointing his finger at Apple.

Systrom argues that because Instagram is housed in Apple’s App Store, it must abide by the Store’s age rating policy. Since Instagram is in the 12+ age rating category, which Systrom says allows for younger users, the app can’t have explicit nudity. The 17+ rating category would allow nudity, but Systrom fears that would keep away potential younger users.

Systrom’s argument is problematic because Twitter is rated age 4+  but is full of porn star accounts and nudity.

Regardless the reason or rationale, excuses from Instagram are unlikely to hold up. It is increasingly clear that there are different standards for male nudity and female nudity and this gender discrimination needs to stop. #FreeTheNipple.
